Pregnancy brings many transformations to the women’s body including musculoskeletal changes that may alter normal biomechanics. Most of the time your body adapts to accommodate these changes, but sometimes you can develop aches and pains that may make you uncomfortable and stop you from doing your favourite activities.

Osteopathy can help you deal with these uncomfortable symptoms during and after pregnancy. The most common complains for pregnant women and new mothers to visit an osteopath are:

  • lower back pain and sciatica
  • aching or cramps in legs or feet
  • numbness and tingling in the hands
  • neck, shoulder or middle back pain
  • incontinence
  • poor sleep
  • shortness of breath

At Kingscliff Osteopathy, we will take a thorough medical history to make sure that you and your baby are safe and healthy. If we decide that your complaint is musculoskeletal and that we can help you, we will continue with an osteopathic assessment to find what structures are causing your pain and why. We will deliver gentle osteopathic manual therapy to help manage your symptoms. We will also provide you with exercises, lifestyle and ergonomic advice so that you can manage your symptoms and avoid further injury.

After birth, your osteopath can help you with assessments of your pelvis and spine, and assist you in your recovery if you suffered any sprains or strains during labour.

A really common complaint we see in the clinic with new mums and dads is neck and shoulder pain. These complaints quite often originate from sustaining new positions for long periods such as feeding your baby, changing nappies or co-sleeping. Once more, we can help you identify the positions that are causing the problem and prevent this from happening with ergonomic advice.

Sometimes, your osteopath may decide that you could benefit from visiting another allied health professional such as a women’s health physiotherapist or an exercise physiologist. We will discuss with you the reasons and make sure that you are as informed as possible so that you can make the right decision.
